Kenetech 33M-VS Variable Speed Windturbine
US Windpower changed its name to Kenetch in 1993.
I was part of the team at US Windpower/Kenetech that developed the World's first true variable speed windturbine that turned upwind for low noise and low blade turbulence. The system used first generation IGBTs for both the generator control and grid connection. This was one of the first times that power electronics provided power to the grid, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The blades had a 33m diameter and a power rating of 365kW.
The following 2 pictures were taken in 1991 when the prototype for the 33M-VS first operated and provided power to the Grid. I am in the picture on the right with the group involved developing the 33M-VS.
The German Windpower Museum in Stemwede-Oppendorf has a nacelle from a 33M-VS that was installed in Europe.
