James Hagerman - Chief Technical Advisor

I have over 40 years of applicable technology development for modern Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology, Renewable Energy Technologies and Energy Storage Technologies. I have been an early developer in all of these technologies. Most technologies today are not new. They are using previous technologies with faster semiconductors.

Analog to Digital Transition

In college (1976-1980) I learned analog logic and control theory, then during my college years digital logic and digital control theory began to evolve. I was part of this transition and fully understand the real relationship between the analog and digital world. The real world is analog and not digital.

Evolution of personal computers

I designed and built my first computer while in college (1978), using a Z80 and CPM operating system. I created a unique communication system for people with Cerebral palsy (1979). The initial design used an Apple I built into a briefcase.

Early Motor Drive Technology

I worked on early motor drive technology using Forced Commutated Thyristors (SCRs). I designed the control hardware (8086) and control software. The software was written in assembly code and included a multitasking real-time control system.

Novel & Innovative Voice Recognition (1985-1986)

I designed the hardware using a unique IC from NEC Japan (D7763D). The D7763D performed an Analog FFT. No one else used this novel technique, I found this solution because I understand the relationship between Analog and Digital. I did both the hardware and software algorithms.

World's First True Variable Speed Windturbine

I was part of the team at US Windpower/Kenetech that developed the World's first true variable speed windturbine (33M-VS) that turned upwind for low noise and low turbulance. The system used first generation IGBTs for both the generator control and grid connection. This was one of the first times that power electronics provided power to the grid, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E).

Novel Motor Drive Development (1992-1995)

Led the development of a 3-level GTO based 5500HP motor drive with 6000Vdc. The system used Field Orientation Control (FOC) and 3-level Space Vector Modulation (SVM). The development used first generation code generation of Simulink Models and dSpace. Both of those technolgies were new technologies and now are used extensively.

Kinetic Energy Storage

I have been involved with the design of two different novel Kinetic Energy Storage systems. Both of the them used Magnet Bearings in very different designs.

Early Modern Hybrid and EV Development

Hybrids and EVs were initially developed over 100 years ago. Modern Hybrids and EVs only use modern technologies that were developed during my career. An EV is a Power System on wheels and not a vehicle as understood in the past. This is a major problem with the EV industry. Once you realize it is a Power System on wheels the problems of energy flow and balancing are much clearer. The idea of a distributed DC Supply is old technology.

I have a very unique background and knowledge of complete Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. My experience at Bosch as the Lead Technical Engineer for the development of the Fiat 500e for California & Oregon, combined with my extensive knowledge of the design and development of all the Electrification and Vehicle Products. Bosch supplied the entire 500e Electric Vehicle drivetrain, including the battery. I supported the concept development, integration, debugging and calibration from concept to production in Mexico.

International Experiences

I have a unique background of International Engineering in the US, Germany, China, France and England. I have knowledge of Inverter Hardware and Software design in addition to complete vehicle design and integration for Electric Vehicles. I have developed products from 48Vdc to 6000Vdc in various Industries.

I worked in China, at Great Wall Motor and Geely Automotive, in charge of product development for High Voltage and 48V eMobility Products from 2016-2019. I was also the Chief Engineer for a High Voltage Range Extender Project at Geely. I worked on the System Design of new Electric and Hybrid Vehicles including the Lotus SUV and the Smart EV.
